Vaughan Williams wrote nine symphonies, no two of which are similar. Each displays its own unique mood. His first was A Sea Symphony written between 1903 and 1909 in which he explores the ‘deep waters’ of Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass”. His last, composed between 1957 and 1958 was Symphony No 9, originally inspired by Hardy’s work “Tess of the D’Urbervilles”.
